Ski touring allows un-paralleled versatility in traveling in the mountains during winter months. It has the added bonus of the enjoyment of downhill skiing to get down the slopes. With it comes the hazards of being in the alpine environment, but with some good instruction and use of safe proven techniques you'll enjoy years of ski tours, exploring all sort of wonderful locations.
We offer the 5 day high alpine touring course as an entry level instruction course to introduce and develop the skills used for Ski-Touring. It is thorough and extremely skills based so you will be learning as you go to get most out of your time in the mountains. Safe and efficient touring techniques are demonstrated in a sequence that add pieces to the puzzle one by one, the end result being someone with many skills to guide themselves in suitable terrain. We will use a base of Barron Saddle Hut, high in Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park. It is well suited with varied terrain, great features and ease in access and skiing out.
You will need to be a confident skier with abilities to ski mixed terrain with good technique. This will be discussed and confirmed before participation.
An average course would cover the following:
- Tour planning and logistics
- Terrain selection and Avalanche awareness
- Rescue scenarios
