This introductory level course will provide all the necessary skills for you to feel safe in an alpine environment, and prepares you for more learning when the time is right. It is a good option for those backcountry enthusiasts who have never had formal instruction, or for those whose skills need refreshing.
The course is based in the mountains above Queenstown on the Remarkables Range. As a group, a campsite will be selected, tents erected and you can enjoy a taste of what the alpine environment is all about. The course goal will be to have the group lead themselves to the summit of Single Cone (2319m) on the second day, using the skills learned on day one. Further challenges will be added as group experience and skills dictate.
Dependent on the experience and desires of the group you will learn all the basics of snow craft such as:
- Use of technical gear such as crampons and ice tools
- Self-arresting
- Building anchors and belays
- Rope management skills
- Abseiling and prussiking
- Climbing on snow and ice
- Mountain safety issues
- Avalanche hazard awareness
- Route finding and terrain selection
